Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the devil. And when He had fasted forty days and forty nights, afterward He was hungry. Then Jesus was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted : After identifying with sinners in His baptism, Jesus then identified with them again in severe temptation. This was a necessary part of His ministry, so He truly was led up by the Spirit into the wilderness. Jesus did not need to be tempted to help Him grow.
Instead, He endured temptation both so that He could identify with us Hebrews andand to demonstrate His own holy, sinless character. The Holy Spirit cannot tempt us Jamesbut the Holy Spirit may lead us to a place where we will be tempted. This is not to prove something to God who knows all thingsbut to prove something to us and to the spiritual beings watching us.
Tempted by the devil : Temptation is a certainty for everyone. It was more severe because He was tempted directly by the devil himself, while we contend mainly with lesser demons. Therefore He bore levels of temptation we will never know by experience.
Many commentators believe it is improper to refer to this section as the temptation of Jesus, because the word peirazo is more often and more accurately translated testing instead of temptation. It means to test far more than it means to tempt in our sense of the word. It is said that when hunger pains return after such a fast He was hungryit indicates the subject is beginning to starve to death.
It was supernatural, but not beyond human capacity when enabled by the Spirit of God. Forty days and forty nights : This is a familiar period of testing in the Bible, both in the days of Noah and for Israel in the wilderness. Jesus will succeed where Israel as a nation failed. Luke; but these three worst assaults were reserved to the last. This was a period of forced dependence upon God the Father.
We remember: He learned obedience through the things which He suffered Hebrews When the tempter came : Notice that Matthew writes when the tempter came.
In our lives, it is not a question of if the tempter will come, but when he will come. We will face temptation until we go to glory. God had one Son without sin, but he never had a son without temptation.
We should consider the circumstances that preceded the temptation of Jesus:. Satan suggested that Jesus use His miraculous powers to provide food for Himself. The Bible has many accounts of miraculous provision, some at the hands of Jesus. Yet Jesus would not command that these stones become breadespecially at the instigation of Satan.
We might say that Jesus was being tested through His strengths, through His gifts. Would He allow His strengths to become traps? When Jesus quoted DeuteronomyJesus shows that every word that proceeds from the mouth of God should be more precious to us than food itself.
He could have stood against Satan with a display of His own glory; He could have stood against Satan with logic and reason. Instead, Jesus used the word of God as a weapon against Satan and temptation.

Matthew 4 – The Temptation of Jesus and His First Galilean Ministry
As your Example. As your Friend. If you see to the following what will Christ do? These heavenly fishermen follow Christ personally. They follow Him circumstantially. They follow Him singly, with a single eye. The great lesson of the text may be summed up in this-that successful work for Jesus must spring out of a devout imitation of Him.
In the example of Christ there are two points which it is important to look at.
The estimate Jesus Christ gave to humanity in contrast with all the other objects that engaged His attention. In comparison with the claims of man, everything else was regarded as subsidiary.
His whole career was evolved from this central conception in regard to humanity. To save men-that was His mission. I must work-that was His motto. These thoughts were always present to His mind. Our grand central controlling purpose must be the imitation of the Master, in striving to become the servant of all.
The possession of yearning pity and interest in humanity. The cultivation of a spirit of large self-denial. Persistency in effort.
Does this command stir your soul to nobler work and better service, etc.? What is your response? Not simply a human teacher, but Jesus, who qualified Himself by His earthly life, with its temptations, toil, and suffering, to be the efficient leader of men.
We cannot follow His person as the disciples did; but we may-Obey His precepts and copy His example. There we learn that those who were now called had some months before accepted Him as the Christ Johnand had, some or all of them, been with Him during His visit to Jerusalem.
Simon had already received the surname of Cephas or Peter or the Rock. Putting these facts together, we have something like a clear outline picture of their previous life. The sons of Jona and the sons of Zebedee had grown up in Bethsaida probably on the north-west shore of the Lake of Galileeand were partners in their work as fishermen.
The movement of Judas of Galilee, in his assertion of national independence, had probably served to quicken their expectations of a good time coming, when they should be free from their oppressors. When they heard of the preaching of the Baptist, they joined the crowds that flocked to hear him, and received his baptism of repentance. When He began the first circuit of His Galilean ministry He was alone, and left them to return to their old calling. They could not tell whether He would ever care to use their services again, and it was under these circumstances that the new call came.

Jesus will go to Judea to die, but will return to Galilee after his resurrection Matthewand will deliver his Great Commission in Galilee Matthew Capernaum is about 20 miles 32 kilometers northeast of Nazareth, and is located on the north shore of the Sea of Galilee.
We are not told why Jesus moves to Capernaum. Perhaps it is because Capernaum is larger than Nazareth and is located on a major trade route. Perhaps it is because Capernaum is located just across the Jordan River from the Decapolis, a Gentile region, and therefore has a large Gentile population.
Nevertheless, he will pronounce judgment on it Matthew is concerned to show that Jesus fulfills prophecy. Now that prophecy is fulfilled.
